Asn.txt file updates

Hi!

How do you get your ASN to appear in the https://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/asnames/asn.txt file? We registered ours a week ago but it’s yet to appear there. A few vendors look in this file to see if the AS is active, it is and it’s serving traffic.

Hi Byron,

Apologies for the delayed response. I believe your ASN meanwhile made it to the asn.txt file. When I checked the file this afernoon I found that, with exception of the six which were assigned yesterday, all ASNs issued by RIPE NCC in 2026 were present.

However, I am concerned to read “vendors look in this file to see if the AS is active, and it’s serving traffic”. The asn.txt file is not the right source to make that judgement. Its purpose is to provide automated systems insights into who holds each ASN. The origins of the file go back to the CIDR report which needed a one line description for all ASNs in the analysis. The version on ftp.ripe.net improves the records for RIPE NCC assigned ASNs. It is used by tools like RISwhois, and BGPlay. But due to the nature of the update mechanism, we cannot guarantee the file is always complete and up to date.

For confirmation if an ASN is registered by an RIR, people should use other, authoritative sources. ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/delegated-ripencc-extended-latest, for example, holds the official record of all IPv4, IPv6 and ASN resources presently delegated or held in reserve by RIPE NCC. Similarly, https://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/nro-stats/latest/nro-delegated-stats does the same for all RIRs combined.

Kind regards,

– Rene
